His astute instincts, experience and intellect have proven his positions to be correct on a myriad of important issues during the past four years. Hendrickson cautioned the Governor consistently to keep his word from the agreement with NYRA wherein the state promised to return NYRA to a private not for profit entity in three years.

The Concerned Citizens for Saratoga Racing supports bipartisan legislation now pending in the Assembly and the Senate that would honor that commitment, as well as provide both public and private representation on the NYRA board, as NYRA had recommended. That is the proper path for our state to take if it wants to keep its promise.

Is one sitter allowed while another is a violator? Mathiesen reminded those in attendance that the ordinance is about public safety and not targeting specific groups of people.

We have other ordinances that do the same thing. Our sandwich boards signs have to be a certain dimension away from buildings…These ordinances seemed to have worked well. If a person happens to be sitting on a sidewalk and happen to be obstructing pedestrian flow, they have to be asked to move.

Dorsey, Esq. Compiled below is my list of the top five myths and mistakes in estate planning. The rules of intestacy, however, may not be consistent with your wishes. For example, the intestate estate of a deceased spouse is shared by the surviving spouse and his or her children. This is usually inconsistent with what people want, because they normally want everything to go to their surviving spouse. To avoid this result, it is best to have a Will or Trust in place to ensure your assets are left to the proper beneficiaries.

Number 2: I have a Will so I have nothing to worry about. Having a Will is an important part of your estate plan, but you should remember that your Will does not necessarily dispose of all your non-probate assets. Nonprobate assets include assets that pass upon death because they are jointly held with another or are payable to a named beneficiary. A common example of a joint asset is a house owned jointly with a spouse. A common example of an asset payable to.

As part of your estate plan, you should review all non-probate assets to ensure that they will pass to the beneficiary that you want. For example, you may have forgotten that the insurance policy you obtained through work is still payable to your ex-wife and that a beneficiary change to your children is now in order. Number 3: I have my assets in a Trust so they are protected if I go to a nursing home.

Transferring your assets to a Trust can potentially be an excellent strategy to protect them from having to be sold to pay for nursing home costs. Generally speaking, assets transferred into a Trust more than five years before you apply for Medicaid to pay for nursing home costs will not be counted as assets when determining your Medicaid eligibility.

You have to be sure, however, that the Trust is an Irrevocable Trust properly drafted to protect your assets. If your Trust is a Revocable Trust, which was drafted primarily to avoid probate, such a Trust provides little or no protection of your assets. In general, you and your spouse are individuals who can make financial decisions only for yourselves.

Assets which you own individually, however, cannot be controlled by your spouse. As a result, it is generally recommended that spouses have Powers of Attorney to allow them to handle financial decisions for each other. Powers of Attorney are especially important in the event one spouse becomes incompetent and cannot handle their own affairs.

This amount. The penalty period can delay the onset of the Medicaid coverage for weeks or months. With the advent of the internet, there is an abundance of misinformation regarding estate planning. Unfortunately, minor mistakes can quickly become major catastrophes after a person loses their competency or passes away. In order to avoid such mistakes, you should work with a qualified estate planning professional to ensure you have a plan consistent with your wishes. Matthew J. Over his nineteen years of practice, he has focused in the areas of elder law, estate planning, and estate administration.

Dorsey can be reached at , mdorsey oalaw. Q: What are the possible tax consequences of withdrawing money from my IRA? A: There are several items to consider. Before taking a distribution from a tax-deferred account such as a Traditional or Roth IRA, think about the following. Keep in mind, distributions to shareholders.

It is important to note that if you take money from a regular taxable non-retirement account, such as a single or joint account, you may be subject to capital gains tax. Here is an example. However, a Roth distribution could be taxfree. Meanwhile, a taxable single or joint account may be subject to capital gains tax on proceeds above your original cost at rates ranging from 0 percent to a maximum of 20 percent for long-term gains.

Each scenario has different tax ramifications and your decision should be based upon your situation at any given time. Due to the complex IRA distribution rules, one size does not fit all so speak with an investment professional and discuss what might be right for you.

As always, I recommend including your accountant or tax preparer. Fenimore Asset Management is an independent investment advisory firm located in Cobleskill, NY since In-depth research. Insightful investing. You might want to consider wearing corrective contact lenses only at night, in a method known as orthokeratology ortho-k or corneal refractive therapy.

With orthokeratology, you can have stable vision correction with unrestricted peripheral vision crucial for sports such as basketball and baseball. Depending on the kind of vision error you have, you also are likely to achieve crystal-clear central vision with this option. Studies are underway to test the effectiveness of ortho-k for farsightedness as well. This reshaping of the front of the eye corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism in a way that is similar to a LASIK procedure and other refractive surgery, except that effects are reversible.

Ortho-k contact lenses typically are worn at night during sleep and removed the next morning. Depending on the degree of your nearsightedness or astigmatism and other factors, you may notice a significant improvement in your uncorrected visual acuity even after the very first night of wearing the lenses. Many times, only one pair of ortho-k lenses is needed. For more complex cases, additional pairs with adjusted parameters may be needed.

Once your uncorrected vision reaches the desired level of clarity and stability, you still will need to wear the ortho-k lenses overnight to keep your corneas in the proper shape for good daytime vision. But you may not need to wear ortho-k lenses every night. Every other night sometimes is sufficient. And some ortho-k patients need to wear the lenses only one or two nights a week to maintain excellent visual acuity during the day. Ortho-k and Myopia Control. In addition to its other benefits, ortho-k can potentially reduce the progression of myopia nearsightedness in children and teenagers.

So if you try ortho-k in your teens and then decide to discontinue wearing the reshaping lenses later in life, you may be less nearsighted as an adult than you would be if you had worn eyeglasses or conventional soft contact lenses during your teen years.

An evaluation of your corneas and your eyeglasses prescription or contact lens prescription is required to determine if you are eligible for the procedure. Ortho-k is not for everyone. An evaluation of your prescription and corneas is required to learn if you are eligible. Currently, ortho-k is approved for the correction of mild to moderate amounts of nearsightedness and mild astigmatism. It is most effective for correcting up to Why Ortho-k Might Be Ideal for Certain Athletes Many athletes who have undergone the ortho-k process report positive feedback such as: Greater confidence in their vision.

Less worry about eye problems and fluctuating vision. No concerns about glasses or contact lenses getting knocked off or out during competition. No need to bring spare. No worry about potential complications of refractive surgery, which could adversely affect athletic performance for a lifetime.

While ortho-k can benefit most athletes, sports for which the ability to see without glasses or contact lenses is especially important include archery, boxing, baseball, basketball, climbing, cycling, diving, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, hunting, martial arts, motorcycle racing, rugby, shooting sports, softball, skiing, snowboarding, soccer, surfing, swimming, tennis and wrestling.

In either case the key is somewhere in the middle. You can try again later but do not do any more of this right now unless you want an injury or more inflammation. More importantly anything that causes your pain to increase and stay increased for more than 24 hours is a major concern and should be avoided at this point.

And anything that causes your pain to last more than 72 hours is most likely an injury and will delay the recovery even longer. This applies to people in constant pain too. If your pain increases more than your baseline pain, then your body is asking you to pay attention When you stop the activity it is best to evaluate and see if the pain returns to the same level as when you started.

If so, then it is OK to continue the activity. This means your pain increased but did not stay worse. Often people are looking for activities as the source of why they are not getting better, but more times than not, it is the inactivity that is causing the problem. For example, when you are trying to resume an activity that has caused you problems in the past, I often use the example of the marathon runner returning from an injury.

The best approach is to gradually resume the offensive activity. Get successful at a smaller version of the activity and gradually add to it until you are able to do it fully without lasting pain. If, for example, you are trying to resume vacuuming your living room floor then you should divide the room in half and only do that one half at first. Remembering to stop if the pain increases and evaluate to see if the pain lasts. Stay at that amount until you have two consecutive successful days using this strategy.

At this point a lot of people would try to do the whole house because half the living room did not hurt. This is too much too soon. By methodically building on your activities you will likely arrive at your desired goal faster! For me, the body will let you know if something is bad for you by alerting you with pain.

Most of my week is spent encouraging patients to find movements and positions that. Often moving better first will lead to feeling better second. I routinely say that any activity that helps you move better is helping you get better. Sometimes the pain response is slower. It is very rare for someone to achieve more mobility and not feel better. There are cases but because it is rare, I focus on the improvements and try to remind patients to do the same.

I have also learned that there are two major reasons that people do not find lasting relief when they find something that helps alleviate their pain. When we find an activity that seems to help I often recommend performing it more frequently and gradually to a greater degree. So, when people ask me what to do If it is helping do it more and if you have lasting pain from an activity, stop doing it for now and re-test at a later date after you have gradually built up your ability to be successful.

If you have specific questions please email me at goodemotept gmail. Also you can call to speak to me at Thanks for reading! We spent a lot of time at the playground and playing outside together. A father is responsible for teaching us our identity in the world. Who we are, what we are good at, and how we leave our fingerprint on the world. Next time you go to a playground, pay attention to the children with their parents.

I work with so many individuals daily who are damaged from the inside out because they never received the approval they desperately wanted from their fathers. Take the time to sit with your child and let them know how proud you are of them.

Nurture their spirits and help shape them into strong, courageous individuals who can go out into the world and use their gifts and talents to change the world. Take the time to offer words of affirmation, encouragement, love and approval. Fathers of daughters, how you treat your daughter sets the stage for what kind of romantic relationships she will chose as a young adult.

If you fail to spend time with her as a teen letting her know you value and care for her deeply, she will find the affection and approval she seeks from you elsewhere. Teach your daughters they are worthy of respect, attention, chivalry and love. If you treat her mother poorly or speak disrespectfully about her mother she will learn that this is acceptable behavior, and she will either attract someone who puts her down, or be the person that is emotionally.

Affirm her strength, beauty, gifts and talents. You hold the power to teach your daughter to stand tall and demand respect and health in relationships; when you do not take your job as a father seriously you are setting the stage for future dysfunction, low selfworth and a lifetime of resentment and anger toward you.

Fathers of sons, take the time to raise men. Teach your son to be accountable and treat women with respect and honor. Again, if you disrespect his mother or put her down regularly you are teaching your son that this is acceptable behavior. Take the time to let your son know you value him. Make it a priority to do an activity together regularly where you can teach him a skill or craft.

Affirm him with approval and the gift of your presence. When boys do not receive consistent approval from their fathers they tend to struggle finding purpose in their adult lives. When they were small, we would often take rides on summer evenings oh those days of no air conditioning were so long, and so hot, and I looked forward to our ride every night—it was more for me than for them!

The boys absolutely loved it. But the real thrill for them in regards to the train station has been what my Dad—their Poppie—devised when my oldest was three: Dad decided to take him on a train ride from Saratoga to Fort Edward—a half-hour trip— so my boy could have the experience of riding on a train without making it an overly long trip or breaking the bank.

My four older boys have all had their trips, and my oldest nephew as well. And just a couple weeks ago, my No. The excitement! I packed a little lunchbox for him with a juice box and his stuffed lamb lovey his request , and we picked my dad up and got to the. There are toys to play with and the bathroom to explore, and seeing the passengers arriving to wait for their trains and hearing the train information announced on the loudspeaker increases the anticipation.

At a certain point we go to sit on the benches outside by the tracks, and Dad points out the railroad lights and explains what they mean, and mimics the sound of the train whistle so we know what to listen for. I have pictures of each one of my boys looking down the tracks and pointing when they see the train coming, and the looks of wonder and excitement and innocence can make you just cry.

My big boys still talk about their train rides. Thanks to him for being a great grandfather and role model! Kate and her husband have six sons ages 11, 9, 7, 6, 4, and 2. Up until three years ago, I had no idea there were kids like this in this district. Not in Africa. If we feed them and they have enough energy to function in school, they can do well in school and have opportunities to break the cycle.

Well, we have to reach the kids first. Kombucha is a live, fermented drink made by combining yeast and bacteria with tea and sugar. It is generally low in sugar and calories and full of organic acids that are rich in antioxidants. Bremser said he and his family began brewing kombucha at home when his wife was being treated for breast cancer to aid in her recovery. Bremser did not like the sugar contents of commercially available kombucha and sought a simpler preparation. Homebrewing turned out to be a rewarding experience that the Bremsers decided they should share with others.

The yeast then eats the sugar to produce ethanol, which is eaten by the bacteria and produces organic acids. During the fermentation process, a new colony of bacteria forms and can be used to start other batches. The Bremsers opened their. Saturdays and from 3 to 6 p. It does sound contradictory that a sharp knife could cause less injury. However, a sharp knife means you make fewer cuts and do not have to work as hard as you would to cut when using a dull knife. The law of averages shows that there is less of a chance of cutting yourself with a sharp knife then with a dull knife. A sharp knife also cuts more precisely with less chance of slippage.

Overall; a sharp knife promotes better cutting techniques. The spring action bars adjust to different blade angles. This sharpener can last over five years with home use. As the owner of the store and an expert at knife sharpening, I personally love this sharpener! Cooking with Dad in the kitchen can create memories and skills to last a lifetime.

Rather, it is whether and how journalists can honestly and responsibly cover these complicated subjects. In this case, the journalists failed. The reporter and her editors at Rolling Stone failed to verify basic information from their source, and they failed to contact the people who could have corroborated — or contradicted — the story.

They did not provide members of the fraternity where the attack supposedly took place with detailed allegations to which they could respond. After the reporter tried but failed to locate the alleged perpetrator, the magazine simply used a pseudonym to write about him. To hear Rolling Stone tell it, those oversights came about because the reporter wanted to be particularly sensitive to a woman who claimed to be the victim of a sexual assault.

But it is unacceptable to compromise the truth in the name of sensitivity. Of course journalists who interview victims of violent crimes and their families should be kind and respectful. As we all know, sexual assault has been viewed in society as such a stigmatizing occurrence that victims have often been reluctant even to report it. Many newspapers, including The Times, do not print the names of rape victims.

But none of that excuses media organizations from their responsibility to diligently and thoroughly examine the cases they cover. Covering sexual assault is complicated. Even the basic statistics about how common assaults are on campus are being challenged. In this fraught climate, for a publication like Rolling Stone to come at a story with a preconceived point of view and then botch the reporting does no one any good.

Thank God for America To the Editor: My letter last month ended with a concern about the old age of some career politicians. This can be corrected by establishing a mandatory retirement age of 65 years old, not only for elected officials but for all government employees. Another serious problem in state and federal government is compensation.

Some school teachers no longer qualified to teach school are required to be at school every school day. They sit in a room with other unqualified teachers until they are able to retire on full pension. A goal for all citizens of the U. In private industry, if unions or other forces cause employee compensation to become more than the company can afford,.

We limit letters to words and one published letter every 30 days. All letters are subject to editing. In the case of government employees, if wages get too high, caused by union demands or other forces, to stay in budget, taxes are raised. A system must be established that will assure equality of wages for government employees to that of comparable employees working in private industry. Many states are close to bankruptcy because of this.

See next month for additional recommended changes. Clifford Evenson Johnsburg. Restore Pace service To the Editor: Not that this affected me, but it did a friend of mine who lives in Union. As of March 1, Pace service was discontinued to Union and the rest. Because they would not pay to have the service anymore. Where is that tax money going? If Pace can leave Marengo and take people to Huntley, bypassing and going through Union, what is wrong with this picture?

Maybe Coral Township should come up with a way to fund Pace. The village president of Union is also the township commissioner — maybe they should be two different people due to a conflict of interest. And maybe the residents of Coral Township and Union should start looking into this and find out the real reasons behind Pace being stopped — quit complaining, and do something about it.

So much has changed for the Bears this offseason. Sports editor Jon Styf and assistant sports editor Tom Clegg discuss:. Styf: Jay Cutler is what he is. They changed everything else to change the culture of the team here. How in the world is Jay Cutler still the quarterback?

Clegg: I think it says more about the state of available quarterbacks around the NFL than anything else. You remember when John Fox coached a Tebow-quarterbacked team to the playoffs, right? Anybody can be a placeholder along with Jimmy Clausen while they find someone they actually trust to lead the team.

Clegg: I think you answered your own original question there. Look what Fox was able to do with Tim Tebow. If he can win a playoff game with Tebow, he certainly can do it with Cutler. Is Cutler the long-term solution? Absolutely not. But until they find the right guy probably in the draft , you could do a lot worse than him.

He has all the physical tools; maybe Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase can figure out a way to make him stop throwing interceptions. There is no helping Jay Cutler figure it out. You see what you get. The difference between Tebow and Cutler is that Tebow had his head in the game and was willing to be coached. He broke Marc Trestman, who used to be considered a smart offensive mind who was great at working with QBs.

Cutler remains more of the problem than the solution. The whole addition by subtraction concept. Clegg: You mean like getting rid of your guy Brandon Marshall? When does his contract run out again? His responsibilities ramped up during the postseason, but it paid off when he got to travel with the seventh-seeded Spartans to the Sweet 16 in Syracuse, New York, and the Final Four in Indianapolis.

You always want to say you expect to win a championship. I think we almost expected to win more games than people picked us to win. In terms of workload, it does pick up a lot from a non-player standpoint. It will bump up to 70 or 80 hours a week. It was a lot more work, but everybody was always in high spirits. For each team we might play, we needed to prepare games for all of them.

That takes probably about an hour to do one game and you do 10 games for each team. From there, it goes into even further dissecting. The moment that definitely stood out was in the Elite 8. There was a moment in overtime against Louisville when we knew we were going to win.

I remember being with the rest of the managers and everyone just losing our minds thinking about how hard we worked and how close we came the year before. I was jumping up and down and hugging people. That was pretty special. We traveled to Indy for the Final Four.

Coach will Stay healthy: With Rose it to be about performance. With everyone, notably Derrick Rose, dressed in short pants and going up and down the floor — a rarity in this injury-riddled season — the Bulls seemed poised to cruise. After all, they had won 12 of their last 15 at home. The 76ers — who dressed only nine players, including no point guards — had lost seven games wherever they played. This was supposed to be an opportunity for the Bulls to improve their cohesiveness and try to advance their playoff seed.

And this game was no departure. The Bulls had their projected starting five available for only the 21st game this season. They are in those games. In his third game back from knee surgery, Rose had 22 points on 8 for 19 shooting, including three of his trademark physical drives to the hoop for fourth-quarter baskets. He also had eight assists. What would you give for a day, a week or a lifetime of pain-free mobility? Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis. In osteoarthritis, the surface layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows the bones under the cartilage to rub together, resulting in pain, swelling and loss of motion of the joint.

Although in some people it progresses quickly, in most individuals joint damage develops gradually over years. After careful study and several trials, the FDA approved a new treatment aimed at helping those with knee pain. This new treatment is a high-tech answer for all those who think that surgery, dietary supplements and prescription medications are the only option to eliminate knee pain.
